Fueling yourself for the ride ahead

Imagine yourself 50 kms into your Gran Fondo and you get that feeling that you are about to hit a wall and you have nothing more to give. In cycling that term is known as “bonking". Avoiding the “bonk” is simple, all it requires you to do is to fuel at every stage of your ride.

Before you go out on your ride make sure you are properly fueled with carbohydrates. Carbs are the best source of fuel for cyclists and they can be found in many forms. If you are in a rush, you can even get your carbs through a drink mix.

During your ride it is important to continue to fuel your body. Replenishing your body with electrolytes will help you continue your ride and perform at your best for longer.

Protein is essential for cycling recovery, it helps strengthen and repair muscles post workout. It does not have to be in the form of a medium rare steak cooked to perfection. It could be a nice post work out protein shake that is easy to digest and tasty.

Fuel for your body does not always have to be a sport drink mix, it can also be in the form of gels or bars. If you want to cycle at your best, recover well, and stay healthy, ensuring you are properly fueled is the first step to reaching the next level.
